The foundational principle of WD-40® Multi-Use Product is its ability to displace water. The formula has a lower surface tension and a higher affinity for metal than water does. When sprayed on a wet surface, it physically gets underneath the water molecules, breaking their surface tension and lifting them off the metal substrate. It then establishes a thin, non-volatile, corrosion-resistant barrier that prevents moisture from re-establishing contact with the surface.
