Overview

WD-40® Multi-Use Product is a world-renowned, versatile chemical compound engineered to solve a wide range of maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) challenges. Originally developed in 1953 to protect the outer skin of the Atlas missile from rust and corrosion, its "Water Displacement, 40th formula" has become an indispensable tool in aviation, industrial, and workshop settings. This 16-ounce industrial-size aerosol can delivers the trusted formula that performs five primary functions: it lubricates, penetrates, protects, removes, and displaces moisture, making it a true "toolkit in a can" for A&P mechanics, engineers, and technicians.

Key Features

The legendary performance of WD-40® Multi-Use Product is defined by its five core functions:

  • Displaces Moisture: Its primary function is to quickly drive out moisture from electrical and mechanical systems. With an extremely high surface attraction to metal, it gets under moisture to establish a protective barrier, eliminating moisture-induced short circuits on ignition systems, electrical contacts, and connectors.
  • Penetrates Seized Parts: The formula's ultra-low surface tension allows it to creep into the tightest clearances, breaking the bonds of rust and corrosion that freeze threaded fasteners and other metal parts. It is highly effective at freeing stuck, rusted, or frozen bolts, nuts, valves, and mechanical linkages.
  • Lubricates Moving Parts: The lubricating ingredients are widely dispersed and hold firmly to all moving parts. It provides smooth, squeak-free operation for hinges, rollers, bearings, chains, and control cables without the use of silicones that can attract dust and dirt.
  • Protects Metal Surfaces: Deposits a thin, corrosion-resistant barrier that shields metal surfaces against moisture and other corrosive elements. It is highly effective for short-term corrosion protection on tools, equipment, and bare metal parts during storage or maintenance.
  • Removes Contaminants: The formula acts as a powerful solvent that gets under grease, grime, adhesives, and caked-on gunk. It is excellent for cleaning tools, equipment, and airframe surfaces, easily removing residues from tape and decals.

Aerospace & Industrial Compatibility

WD-40® Multi-Use Product is a staple in hangars, MRO facilities, and workshops worldwide. Its versatility makes it suitable for countless non-critical preparation and maintenance tasks.

  • Common Applications:
    • Penetrating Oil: Freeing corroded or over-torqued fasteners on inspection panels, landing gear components, and engine accessories.
    • Moisture Displacement: Drying out wet ignition harnesses, magneto components, and electrical connectors after washing or exposure to rain.
    • Light Lubrication: Lubricating shop equipment, tool drawers, hinges, and non-critical airframe components.
    • Cleaning: Removing grease and grime from tools, engine components during teardown, and adhesive residue from airframe surfaces.
    • Corrosion Prevention: Applying a light protective coating to bare metal parts or tools to prevent flash rust during maintenance activities.

Why Choose WD-40 Multi-Use Product?

In a professional maintenance environment, versatility and reliability are key. WD-40® Multi-Use Product provides a single-can solution for a huge range of common MRO tasks. From freeing a stubborn exhaust stud to cleaning landing gear struts or displacing moisture from a connector, its unique formula performs consistently and effectively. It is 50-state VOC compliant, contains no CFCs or other ozone-depleting substances, and is made from materials that are safe on most metals, rubber, wood, and plastics, making it a dependable choice for any professional's toolbox.

The foundational principle of WD-40® Multi-Use Product is its ability to displace water. The formula has a lower surface tension and a higher affinity for metal than water does. When sprayed on a wet surface, it physically gets underneath the water molecules, breaking their surface tension and lifting them off the metal substrate. It then establishes a thin, non-volatile, corrosion-resistant barrier that prevents moisture from re-establishing contact with the surface. This "Water Displacement" action, perfected on the 40th attempt, is what gives the product its name and is a key reason for its effectiveness in restoring water-damaged equipment and preventing moisture-induced electrical failures.

Note: This product is flammable. Use with adequate ventilation and keep away from heat, sparks, and open flames. While compatible with most surfaces, always test on a small, inconspicuous area first, especially on sensitive plastics like clear polycarbonate and polystyrene. For long-term corrosion protection on airframe components, a dedicated aviation corrosion inhibitor (such as ACF-50) is recommended.
