MIL-H-6000 -8 (1/2") – Low-Pressure Synthetic Rubber Oil and Coolant Hose

Available now on the Airparts.aero Marketplace.

Overview

This product is a bulk, low-pressure fluid transfer hose manufactured in strict accordance with the Military Specification MIL-H-6000. It is specifically engineered for fabricating flexible hose assemblies used in aircraft engine oil and liquid coolant systems. This particular hose is the -8 (Dash 8) size, corresponding to a 1/2-inch inside diameter. The hose's multi-layer construction is designed to withstand the heat, pressure, and fluid exposure found in a piston engine compartment.

It is critical to understand that MIL-H-6000 is a low-pressure specification and this hose must not be used for high-pressure hydraulic systems (e.g., landing gear or flaps), which require steel-braided hose manufactured to different specifications. As a certified mil-spec product, this hose provides the quality and traceability required for creating airworthy hose assemblies for critical engine fluid lines. This product is typically sold by the foot.

Key Features

  • Compliant with MIL-H-6000: Manufactured and tested to meet all requirements of the military standard for low-pressure aircraft oil and coolant hose, ensuring quality and performance.

  • For Low-Pressure Oil/Coolant Systems: Specifically designed for applications such as engine oil cooler lines, crankcase breather lines, and liquid coolant systems on engines so equipped.

  • Multi-Layer Reinforced Construction: Features a seamless inner tube, a high-strength braided textile reinforcement layer, and a durable outer cover for resistance to pressure and damage.

  • Oil and Heat Resistant: The synthetic rubber compounds used in its construction are formulated for long-term resistance to the degrading effects of hot petroleum-based lubricating oils and ethylene glycol coolants.

  • -8 Size (1/2" ID): The standard -8 size for a wide range of oil and coolant line applications in general aviation aircraft.

Aircraft Compatibility

MIL-H-6000 -8 is a universal bulk hose product used to fabricate hose assemblies for a vast range of piston-engine aircraft, including models from:

  • Textron Aviation (Cessna, Beechcraft)

  • Piper

  • Mooney

  • Cirrus (coolant lines on some models)

  • And in the experimental aircraft community.

Note: This is bulk hose material. Its applicability is determined by the specific hose assembly being fabricated, as defined by the aircraft or engine maintenance manual.

Applications

  • Fabrication of flexible lines for engine oil coolers.

  • Crankcase breather (breather) hose assemblies.

  • Liquid coolant lines for engines such as the Continental IO-550-N.

  • General low-pressure petroleum-based fluid transfer lines within the engine compartment.

  • WARNING: Not for use in high-pressure hydraulic systems, fuel systems, instrument lines, or any application inside the aircraft cabin or cockpit.

Why Choose MIL-H-6000 Hose?

The hose carrying an engine's lubricating oil is a flight-critical component. A failure results in a rapid and catastrophic loss of all engine oil. Using certified MIL-H-6000 hose is the only way to ensure the assembly is airworthy. This hose is specifically formulated and constructed to resist bursting, swelling, hardening, and cracking when exposed to the continuous heat, vibration, and chemical environment of an engine compartment. The use of a non-certified, commercial-grade product (such as automotive hose) would lead to certain and premature failure.

The MIL-H-6000 hose is an engineered composite where each layer serves a distinct and critical function. The innermost tube is typically made from a high-acrylonitrile grade of Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR). The high concentration of polar acrylonitrile groups in the polymer chain makes it highly resistant to swelling and degradation when exposed to non-polar hydrocarbon oils. The central reinforcement layer consists of one or more tightly woven braids of polyester or rayon textile. The angle of this braid is precisely controlled during manufacturing; it is this braid angle that gives the hose its ability to resist bursting under pressure while still retaining the flexibility needed for installation. The outer cover is often a different synthetic rubber, such as Neoprene (CR) or EPDM, selected not for its oil resistance, but for its superior resistance to abrasion, ozone, and UV light, thereby protecting the critical inner layers from the external environment.

Note: This is bulk hose material used to fabricate flight-critical hose assemblies. This product has a finite shelf life determined by its quarter/year of manufacture (cure date), which is printed on the hose layline. Expired hose must not be used. Hose assemblies must be fabricated and installed by a certified A&P mechanic in strict accordance with standard practices (e.g., FAA AC 43.13-1B). The correct hose fittings and clamps must be used, and the final assembly must be pressure tested before installation. The hose must be routed to prevent kinking, chafing, and exposure to extreme heat sources.
