3A2923 – LPT Blade Stage 4

Available now on the Airparts.aero Marketplace.

Overview

The 3A2923 is a genuine OEM, flight-critical 4th stage low-pressure turbine (LPT) blade, engineered by Pratt & Whitney for the legendary JT8D series of low-bypass turbofan engines. This is not just a simple blade; it is a precision-cast airfoil, a masterpiece of metallurgy and aerodynamic design. Its sole function is to extract energy from the high-velocity gas stream exiting the engine's high-pressure section. Manufactured from an advanced nickel-based superalloy, the 3A2923 is designed to withstand extreme temperatures and immense centrifugal forces, providing the rotational energy required to drive the engine's fan and low-pressure compressor.

Key Features

  • Advanced Superalloy Construction: Fabricated from a directionally solidified or single-crystal nickel-based superalloy. This material is chosen for its exceptional creep resistance, high tensile strength, and resistance to oxidation and corrosion at the extreme temperatures of the turbine section.
  • Precision-Cast Airfoil: The blade features a complex, three-dimensional airfoil shape designed to efficiently capture the kinetic energy of the exhaust gas stream and convert it into rotational torque on the turbine disc.
  • "Fir-Tree" Root Design: The base of the blade features a "fir-tree" serrated root. This design allows the blade to be securely locked into a corresponding broached slot on the turbine disc, evenly distributing the immense centrifugal loads generated at high RPM.
  • Engineered for High-Cycle Fatigue: Designed and tested to withstand millions of stress cycles without fatigue failure, ensuring the long-term integrity and reliability of the engine's rotating assembly.
  • Genuine Pratt & Whitney OEM Part: As a genuine factory component, it guarantees conformance to the stringent metallurgical, manufacturing, and quality control standards required for a part that operates in the most hostile environment within the engine.

  • Primary Engine Models:
    • Pratt & Whitney JT8D series
  • Common Historic Aircraft Platforms:
    • Boeing: 727, 737-100, 737-200
    • McDonnell Douglas: DC-9, MD-80 series
    • Dassault: Mercure
    • Sud Aviation: Super Caravelle

Applications

The 3A2923 is a flight-critical component essential for engine operation and overhaul:

  • Engine Power Generation: Its primary application is to work in concert with hundreds of other turbine blades across multiple stages to produce the shaft horsepower required to drive the engine's fan, which generates the majority of the thrust.
  • Engine Overhaul & Repair: Turbine blades are primary hot-section components that are inspected and replaced during engine overhaul. They are meticulously checked for cracking, erosion, and "creep" (stretching).

Why Choose 3A2923?

The failure of a single turbine blade in flight would be catastrophic, leading to a massive, uncontained engine failure. The 3A2923 is an engineered solution, designed and manufactured by Pratt & Whitney to meet these extreme challenges. Using a genuine, traceable OEM blade is the only way to ensure the part has the certified material composition, correct grain structure, and has passed the rigorous non-destructive testing required for a safe and airworthy engine. For the heart of a turbine engine, there can be no compromise on quality.

The 4th stage LPT blade (3A2923) operates in a punishing environment. It is subjected to gas temperatures that can still be in excess of 1,000°C, while spinning at thousands of RPM. The centrifugal force acting on a single blade can be equivalent to hanging a large vehicle from its root. To combat this, the blade is made from a nickel-based superalloy. The single-crystal or directionally solidified casting process aligns the metal's grain boundaries parallel to the direction of centrifugal force, dramatically increasing its resistance to "creep"—the tendency for a material to permanently stretch under high stress and temperature. The "fir-tree" root design provides a large surface area with multiple load-bearing "lobes" to distribute these immense forces safely into the turbine disc.

Note: This is a flight-critical, often serialized engine component. Installation must be performed by a certified A&P or AME mechanic at a qualified engine overhaul facility in strict accordance with the current Pratt & Whitney engine overhaul manual. Turbine blades are installed in balanced sets, and installation procedures are extremely complex.
