Overview

The Eaton Aeroquip AE102-16 is a genuine, high-performance aerospace firesleeve, representing the industry standard for passive fire protection and thermal insulation of fluid-carrying hoses, cables, and wiring harnesses. This is not a simple cover; it is a sophisticated insulating sleeve manufactured to the stringent requirements of SAE Aerospace Standard AS1072 Type I. The AE102-16 is constructed from a braided fiberglass substrate and coated with a thick layer of specially formulated silicone rubber. It is designed to protect critical lines firewall forward from high ambient heat and, most importantly, to delay the failure of a hose assembly in the event of a direct flame, providing precious time for the pilot to react to an in-flight fire.

Key Features

  • AS1072 Type I Fire Protection: Engineered and tested to withstand a direct flame at 2000°F (1093°C) for a minimum of 15 minutes without burn-through. This is a critical safety feature that prevents the immediate rupture of a hose carrying flammable fluids in a fire.
  • High-Temperature Thermal Insulation: Provides excellent thermal insulation, with a continuous operating temperature range of -65°F to +450°F (-54°C to +232°C). This protects the fluid inside the hose from high ambient engine compartment heat, preventing fuel vaporization or the thermal breakdown of hydraulic fluid and oil.
  • Silicone Rubber & Fiberglass Construction: Features a seamless, braided fiberglass inner sleeve for strength, which is coated with a thick, high-grade, iron-oxide red silicone rubber. The silicone provides thermal insulation and fire resistance, and is resistant to hydraulic fluids, oils, and fuels.
  • Abrasion Resistance: The tough, flexible silicone outer layer provides excellent protection against chafing and abrasion for the underlying hose assembly, extending its service life.
  • Industry Standard Component: As the premier firesleeve from Eaton Aeroquip, it is the specified product for countless OEM and MRO applications across all categories of aviation.

Aircraft Compatibility

The Aeroquip AE102-16 is a universal protection product used on virtually all certified and experimental aircraft with an engine located in a nacelle or compartment that utilizes 1-inch diameter hoses.

  • Common System Applications:
    • Fuel Lines: Essential protection for all large-diameter flexible fuel hoses firewall forward.
    • Oil Lines: Used on engine and propeller governor oil lines to prevent heat damage and provide fire resistance.
    • Hydraulic Lines: Protects high-pressure, large-diameter hydraulic lines for landing gear, flaps, and primary flight controls.
    • Electrical Wiring: Used to bundle and protect large, critical wiring harnesses from heat and flame.

Applications

The AE102-16 is the standard material for passive fire protection and insulation:

  • Firewall Forward Installations: Mandatory for flammable fluid-carrying lines in the engine compartment as per FAA regulations.
  • Hose Assembly Fabrication & Repair: The primary material used when fabricating or repairing any fuel, oil, or hydraulic hose that will be routed near a heat source.

Why Choose AE102-16?

An engine compartment fire is one of the most critical emergencies in aviation. The Aeroquip AE102-16 firesleeve is an essential layer of defense. It is engineered not only to protect hoses from the high ambient heat of normal operations but to delay a catastrophic burn-through in an active fire. This crucial delay can provide the pilot with the seconds needed to pull a fire handle, shut off the flow of flammable fluid, and discharge the extinguisher. For a flight-critical safety component, there is no substitute for a certified, high-quality firesleeve from a trusted manufacturer like Eaton Aeroquip.

The Aeroquip AE102-16 provides protection through the principle of thermal insulation and ablation. The braided fiberglass substrate has an extremely low thermal conductivity, slowing the transfer of heat to the hose inside. The outer silicone rubber layer provides the primary fire resistance. When exposed to a direct flame of 2000°F, the silicone does not melt and drip; instead, it begins to convert into a crust of silicon dioxide (SiO₂). This process, known as ablation, consumes a significant amount of thermal energy. The resulting silica crust is an excellent thermal insulator itself, creating a protective char layer that further slows heat transfer and protects the underlying fiberglass and the critical hose assembly inside for the certified duration.

Note: This is a flight-critical safety component. Installation must be performed by a certified A&P mechanic. The firesleeve must be properly secured at both ends using either specialized band clamps (e.g., Adel clamps) or another approved method to prevent it from sliding and to ensure a tight seal around the hose fittings.
