Overview

The Cleveland 40-202 is a genuine Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) main wheel assembly, a flight-critical structural component designed for the demanding requirements of various high-performance and turboprop aircraft, including the Piper PA-46 series. Engineered by Cleveland Wheels & Brakes (a division of Parker Hannifin), this 6.00-6 wheel is renowned for its strength, durability, and serviceability. It features a robust, two-piece cast aluminum design that simplifies tire changes and maintenance. As a factory-standard wheel for many popular aircraft, the 40-202 is the benchmark for reliability and performance in its class.

Key Features

  • Two-Piece Split-Rim Design: The wheel is comprised of two halves (inboard and outboard) that are bolted together. This design allows for extremely easy mounting and dismounting of aircraft tires without the specialized, heavy equipment required for drop-center rims, dramatically reducing maintenance time.
  • High-Strength Aluminum Alloy: Cast from a high-quality, aerospace-grade aluminum alloy, providing an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio. The assembly is heat-treated to provide the durability needed to resist cracking and fatigue from the repeated, high-impact landing loads of heavier aircraft.
  • Corrosion-Resistant Finish: Protected by a durable finish that resists corrosion from moisture and harsh environmental conditions, ensuring a long and reliable service life.
  • Engineered for Performance: Designed to work as a complete system with the corresponding Cleveland 30-111 brake assembly, ensuring proper fitment, optimal heat dissipation, and reliable braking performance.
  • Genuine Cleveland OEM Assembly: As a genuine OEM part, it guarantees conformance to the stringent material, manufacturing, and quality control standards of the original aircraft Type Certificate. It includes pre-installed bearing cups, ready for bearing cone installation.

Aircraft Compatibility

The Cleveland 40-202 is the standard OEM main wheel assembly for a significant portion of the high-performance single-engine piston and light turboprop fleet. It is imperative to consult the specific aircraft's Illustrated Parts Catalog (IPC) for final verification.

  • Primary Aircraft Models:
    • Piper PA-46 Series: Malibu, Mirage, Matrix, Meridian
    • Extra EA-400
    • And other aircraft specifying this wheel assembly.

Applications

The 40-202 is a flight-critical component at the center of landing gear operations:

  • Primary Wheel Installation: Serves as the primary rotating assembly that holds the tire and interfaces with the brake system.
  • Landing & Ground Operations: Designed to bear the full weight of the aircraft and withstand the severe spin-up and side-load forces of landing at high speeds.
  • Mandatory Overhaul/Inspection Item: Wheels are subject to strict inspection criteria for cracks (using eddy current or dye penetrant NDT methods), corrosion, and damage at regular intervals and especially during tire changes.

Why Choose 40-202?

The failure of a wheel assembly on landing or takeoff can be catastrophic. The Cleveland 40-202 is the genuine, certified component that was tested and approved by the aircraft manufacturer for this purpose. Using a genuine OEM wheel assembly guarantees that you are installing a part with a known, traceable manufacturing history, free from hidden defects, and made from the correct, certified materials. For a component so fundamental to the safety of every landing, there is no substitute for the proven quality and airworthiness of a genuine Cleveland wheel.

The two-piece design of the Cleveland 40-202 wheel offers a significant maintenance advantage. The wheel halves are secured together with a series of through-bolts and self-locking nuts. To change a tire, a mechanic simply deflates the old tire, removes the through-bolts, and separates the two halves, allowing the tire to be removed easily by hand. The new tire is then placed over the inboard wheel half, the tube is installed and slightly inflated, and the outboard half is placed on top and secured with the bolts. This process is simple, fast, and does not require the heavy pry bars and bead-breaking machines needed for automotive-style one-piece rims, dramatically reducing maintenance time and the risk of damaging the tire bead or wheel rim.

Note: This is a flight-critical component. Installation must be performed by a certified A&P mechanic in accordance with the aircraft and component maintenance manuals. Wheel half through-bolts must be torqued in a star pattern to the specified value. The wheel assembly should be inspected for cracks and corrosion each time the tire is replaced.
