The contact points and capacitor in the AB382622 kit are the two key components of the magneto's primary circuit switch. As the engine rotates, a cam in the magneto opens the contact points. This action must be instantaneous to cause a rapid collapse of the magnetic field in the coil's primary winding. The capacitor is wired in parallel with the points. Its purpose is to absorb the surge of current that is created by the collapsing magnetic field (a phenomenon known as inductive kickback). Without the capacitor, this surge would create a powerful arc across the opening points, which would rapidly erode them and, more importantly, would slow down the collapse of the magnetic field, resulting in a weak or non-existent spark from the coil's secondary winding.
