UREM38E – Tempest Aviation Massive Electrode Spark Plug
Available now on the Airparts.aero Marketplace.
Overview
The Tempest UREM38E is a genuine FAA-PMA approved, massive electrode aviation spark plug, engineered for reliable performance and exceptional value in a wide range of piston engines. As a leader in ignition technology, Tempest has designed the UREM38E to be a durable workhorse, providing consistent, powerful sparks under the demanding temperature and pressure conditions found within aircraft engine cylinders. It features a solid copper core and a proprietary high-conductivity glass seal, making it a trusted, industry-standard choice for private owners, flight schools, and fleet operators.
Key Features
- Massive Electrode Design: Features a robust, two-prong massive electrode ground configuration. This heavy-duty design provides excellent service life and resistance to the high-temperature erosion caused by continuous, high-power engine operation.
- High-Conductivity Copper Core: A solid copper core is used in the center electrode. Copper's exceptional thermal conductivity rapidly dissipates heat from the firing tip to the cylinder head, which helps to prevent pre-ignition and detonation.
- Proprietary Hot-Lock Glass Seal: Utilizes a proprietary glass seal that is "hot-locked" into the spark plug body. This creates a monolithic, 100% gas-tight seal, ensuring that full combustion pressure is contained and that the maximum spark energy reaches the electrode tip.
- Fired-In Suppressor Seal: The internal resistor is a proprietary carbon-based formula that is fired in place to create a stable, fixed resistance. This effectively suppresses radio frequency interference (RFI) that can affect avionics, without the degradation common in other resistor designs.
- Direct PMA Replacement: A certified FAA-PMA direct replacement for the Champion REM38E, guaranteeing perfect form, fit, and function in all specified engine applications.

The Tempest UREM38E's design directly addresses the primary failure modes of aviation spark plugs. The proprietary glass seal is applied using a "hot-lock" assembly process, which creates a bond that is highly resistant to leakage even under extreme pressures of 3,000 to 5,000 PSI. This prevents hot combustion gases from leaking past the insulator, which would otherwise erode the internal components and cause the plug to fail. The solid copper core, extending from the terminal well to deep inside the center electrode, provides a highly efficient path for thermal energy to travel away from the firing tip, keeping the plug within its designed heat range and preventing dangerous pre-ignition events.
Note: This is a flight-critical engine component. Installation must be performed by a certified A&P mechanic. The spark plug electrode gap must be properly set using a feeler gauge, and the plug must be installed with a new copper gasket and torqued to the value specified in the engine maintenance manual.

Product Features:
- Aviation Spark Plug With the most automated manufacturing processes and the most innovative spark plug in the aviation industry. Made in USA.
- High Conductivity Copper Core Center Electrode copper, co-extruded inside a nickel alloy sleeve ensures outstanding heat and electrical conductivity while the nickel sleeve offers high resistance to corrosive combustion gases.
- High Alumina Ceramic Insulator high mechanical strength, superior dielectric properties, proprietary protective glaze, provides high performance to conquer severe operational conditions. "Clean Collar" massive electrode "V" tip focuses heat to reduce fouling and enhance heat range control.
- Proprietary Glass Center Seal 21st century 'fired in' resistor replaces the multipart screw, spring, carbon pile stack up used in competitive plugs and known to suffer from resistance value instability that can cause misfires, wasted fuel, engine roughness.
- Nickel Finish environmentally preferable electrolytic nickel provides an outstanding durable finish, superior corrosion protection, and extreme wear resistance.
- Nickel Ground Electrodes aviation grade nickel electrode design focuses on minimizing sparking voltage requirements while maintaining specification gaps to ensure large, stable 'flame kernels' for on-time ignition and complete combustion.
- Vacuum Infused Center Electrode proprietary, vacuum infusion process seals electrode/insulator gap providing stable heat range and superior center electrode cooling (heat flow to the insulator).
- Hot-Lock Assembly intense pressure and heat create positive, zero-leakage, shrunk in seal between insulator and shell to contain the hot, high-pressure combustion cycle gases.
- Harness Wire Contact smooth, uninterrupted, oxide treated spring contact surface offers enhanced corrosion resistance, is chemically bonded to the fired-in resistor providing the ultimate harness/spark plug termination integrity and energy transfer.
