Overview

The Whelen 01-0770054-03 (base model 70054) is a flight-critical, TSO-certified red wingtip strobe and position light assembly. This is not a simple light; it is a complete, self-contained lighting unit engineered by Whelen Aerospace Technologies to provide both forward-facing position lighting (navigation light) and omnidirectional anti-collision strobe lighting from a single, aerodynamically efficient housing. Designed for the left-hand (port) wingtip, the 01-0770054-03 uses a powerful xenon flash tube for the strobe and a long-life incandescent bulb for the position light. Its robust construction and proven reliability have made it a standard component on a wide range of general aviation aircraft.

This unit is fundamental to the aircraft's visibility and safety, ensuring compliance with all FAA requirements for night and reduced-visibility flight. As a genuine Whelen OEM component, it guarantees the certified light intensity, color, and flash characteristics required for airworthy operation.

Key Features

  • Dual-Function Lighting: Integrates two essential aircraft lights into a single assembly:

    1. Anti-Collision Strobe: A high-intensity, omnidirectional white strobe light that provides 360-degree visibility to other aircraft.

    2. Position Light: A steady-burning, forward-facing red navigation light, as required for the left (port) side of an aircraft.

  • High-Intensity Xenon Strobe: The anti-collision light utilizes a powerful, high-voltage xenon flash tube, driven by a remote power supply. This technology produces an intensely brilliant, instantaneous flash of white light that is highly conspicuous, even in daylight.

  • Aerodynamic Housing: The entire assembly is housed in a durable, aerodynamically shaped base with a streamlined polycarbonate lens, designed to minimize parasitic drag.

  • Radio-Shielded Design: Engineered with integrated shielding to contain the high-frequency electromagnetic energy generated by the strobe circuit, preventing radio frequency interference (RFI) with the aircraft's communication and navigation systems.

  • TSO Certified: Fully certified to the stringent requirements of FAA TSO-C96a (Anti-Collision Lights) and TSO-C30c (Position Lights), ensuring it meets the highest standards for performance, reliability, and safety.

Aircraft Compatibility

The Whelen 01-0770054-03 is a standard OEM and retrofit lighting solution for a vast number of general aviation aircraft.

  • Common Aircraft Platforms:

    • Textron Aviation (Cessna): 172, 182, 206, 210, 300/400 series

    • Piper: PA-28, PA-32, PA-34, PA-44 series

    • Beechcraft: Bonanza, Baron

    • Mooney: M20 series

    • And many other certified and experimental aircraft.

Applications

The 01-0770054-03 is a flight-critical component for aircraft visibility and regulatory compliance:

  • Night & IFR Operations: The position and strobe lights are mandatory for all night operations and are essential for visibility in IFR conditions.

  • Collision Avoidance: The high-intensity strobe light is the primary means of making the aircraft visible to other traffic, significantly reducing the risk of mid-air collisions.

  • Lighting System Overhaul & Upgrade: The specified replacement for a damaged or unserviceable original unit, or as part of a complete lighting system overhaul.

Why Choose 01-0770054-03?

An aircraft's lighting system is one of its most important pieces of safety equipment. The Whelen 01-0770054-03 is a TSO-certified unit from the world leader in aerospace lighting. Using a genuine Whelen assembly ensures that the light output, beam pattern, and flash characteristics meet the precise FAA requirements for color and intensity. For a system this critical to being seen and safe in the sky, there is no substitute for certified, proven performance.

The 01-0770054-03 houses two independent lighting technologies. The position light is a simple incandescent circuit, providing a steady red light with a specified arc of visibility (110 degrees from dead ahead to the left). The strobe light is a high-voltage system. A remote power supply charges a large capacitor to approximately 450 VDC. The timing circuit in the power supply then sends a very high-voltage trigger pulse (several thousand volts) to the xenon flash tube in the 01-0770054-03 assembly. This pulse ionizes the xenon gas, allowing the main capacitor to discharge its energy through the tube in a fraction of a second. This capacitor discharge creates a massive current flow that excites the xenon atoms, producing a brilliant, blue-white flash of light with an effective candela rating many thousands of times brighter than the position light.

Note: This is a flight-critical lighting and high-voltage system component. Installation must be performed by a certified A&P mechanic or avionics technician. It must be connected to a compatible, certified strobe power supply. The high-voltage strobe system can store a lethal electrical charge long after power has been removed. All safety precautions must be followed during service.
