Overview

The Continental Motors BL349260-6 is a genuine OEM, right-side mounted, direct-drive ignition magneto, engineered for the high-performance Continental 520 and 550-series of engines. This unit is a specific configuration of the renowned Bendix S-1200 Series magneto, a flight-critical component designed to generate and distribute high-voltage electrical energy to the spark plugs, completely independent of the aircraft's electrical system. Built to Continental's exacting standards, this magneto provides the reliability, durability, and powerful spark required for the demanding operational environment of high-horsepower, six-cylinder engines.

Key Features

  • Self-Contained Ignition Source: Functions as a self-sufficient electrical generator, using the engine's rotation to create the high-voltage spark for ignition. This provides essential redundancy, as the engine will continue to run even in the event of a total aircraft electrical failure.
  • Bendix S-1200 Series Design: Based on the robust and time-proven Bendix S-1200 magneto design, known for its high-energy output, internal timing stability, and durable construction, making it ideal for large-bore engines.
  • Direct-Drive, Right-Hand Rotation: Specifically designed for the right-hand mounting pad on the engine's accessory case. As a direct-drive magneto, it does not typically feature an impulse coupling, relying on the left-hand impulse-coupled magneto or a "shower of sparks" system for engine starting.
  • High-Energy Output: Features a high-efficiency rotating magnet and coil design that produces a strong, consistent spark across all engine operating RPMs, ensuring efficient combustion and full power development.
  • Genuine Continental OEM Part: As a genuine factory component, it guarantees perfect fitment, correct internal timing, and conformance to the stringent material and quality standards required by the original engine Type Certificate.

    • Mooney: M20 series (with Continental engines)
    • Cirrus: SR22 (with Continental engines)

Applications

The BL349260-6 is a flight-critical component at the heart of the engine's ignition system:

  • Primary Ignition: As one of two magnetos in a dual-ignition system, it is responsible for firing one set of spark plugs in each cylinder.
  • Engine Overhaul: A primary component that is either overhauled or replaced during any major engine overhaul to ensure the ignition system is restored to zero-time reliability.
  • Troubleshooting Ignition Issues: A key component to inspect, test, and service when diagnosing issues of engine roughness, power loss, or a significant RPM drop during the in-cockpit magneto check.

Why Choose BL349260-6?

The dual ignition system is a cornerstone of aviation safety, and the integrity of each magneto is paramount. The Continental BL349260-6 is the genuine, factory-certified component designed to provide reliable spark energy for thousands of hours. Using a genuine OEM magneto ensures you are installing a unit with a known history, certified components, and the precise internal timing required for your high-performance Continental engine. For a system this critical to engine operation, there is no substitute for a genuine factory part.

The BL349260-6 magneto operates on the principle of electromagnetic induction. A permanent magnet rotor, driven by the engine's accessory gear train, spins within the magneto housing. As the magnetic poles pass a soft iron core, a powerful magnetic field is induced and then collapsed in the coil's primary winding. The rapid collapse of this field is triggered by the opening of the internal breaker points. This rapid change in magnetic flux induces a very high voltage (up to 20,000 volts) in the coil's secondary winding. This high-voltage pulse is then directed by the internal distributor to the correct spark plug lead at the precise moment required for ignition. The entire process is self-contained and requires no external electrical power to function.

Note: This is a flight-critical engine component. Installation and timing must be performed by a certified A&P mechanic in strict accordance with the current Continental Motors maintenance and overhaul manuals. Incorrect timing can lead to poor engine performance, detonation, and catastrophic engine damage.
