632310 – Continental Motors OEM Rocker Cover Gasket

Now Superseded by Part Number: 655704

Available now on the Airparts.aero Marketplace.

The 632310 is a specialized sealing component designed for the valve train section of Continental Aerospace Technologies (formerly Teledyne Continental Motors) horizontally opposed engines. Its primary function is to provide a leak-proof seal between the cylinder head and the rocker arm cover (valve cover). This prevents pressurized engine oil—which lubricates the rocker arms, valves, and pushrods—from escaping into the engine compartment.

Continental has officially superseded the 632310 with Part Number 655704. This modernization reflects a significant upgrade in material technology. While the legacy 632310 was traditionally a fiber-based or cork-composite gasket, the new 655704 is a high-performance silicone-based or advanced elastomer gasket. This change was specifically engineered to address common issues such as gasket "shrinking," oil wicking, and the messy "seize-on" effect associated with older organic materials.

Key Features

  • High-Temp Silicone Composition: The 655704 is designed to withstand the intense thermal environment of the cylinder head without becoming brittle or losing its elastic memory.

  • Reusable Capability: Unlike fiber gaskets that must be scraped off and replaced at every inspection, the modernized silicone 655704 is often reusable (provided it is clean and free of tears), making it a favorite for "Owner Assisted" maintenance.

  • Zero-Wicking Seal: Because the material is non-porous, it eliminates "oil sweating," where oil travels through the fibers of the gasket, keeping the engine fins and cowling significantly cleaner.

  • Improved Compression Set: Engineered to maintain constant sealing pressure across the entire flange, even as the rocker cover and cylinder head expand and contract at different rates during flight.

  • Precision Fit: Molded to the exact dimensions of the Continental rocker cover, ensuring no overhang or interference with pushrod tubes.

Why Upgrade to 655704?

The transition from the legacy 632310 to the 655704 is one of the most effective ways to reduce "nuisance" oil leaks in the engine bay. Organic fiber gaskets are prone to drying out and cracking, especially if the aircraft is not flown frequently. Once a fiber gasket starts to leak, the oil often drips onto the exhaust manifold, creating an unpleasant smell and a potential smoke hazard. The silicone 655704 provides a "soft" seal that fills in the minor warping common in stamped-steel or cast-aluminum rocker covers, ensuring a dry engine over hundreds of flight hours.Maintenance & Installation Addendum

Achieving a perfect seal with the 655704 requires a specific approach compared to legacy gaskets.

Tech Tip: The most common mistake is over-tightening. Because silicone is highly compressible, over-torquing the rocker cover screws can cause the gasket to "squish" out or split.

  1. Surface Prep: Clean both the rocker cover and cylinder head mating surfaces with a solvent like MEK or Denatured Alcohol. Ensure they are bone dry.

  2. Dry Installation: These gaskets are designed to be installed DRY. Do not use RTV, Gasket Seal No. 2, or any other liquid sealants, as they act as a lubricant that will cause the gasket to slide out of position.

  3. Torque: Tighten the screws to the Continental-specified torque (typically 45–55 inch-pounds). Use a "cross-pattern" sequence to ensure even pressure.

Note: The 655704 is a flight-critical sealing component. Oil leaks from a failed rocker gasket can lead to engine oil exhaustion and carbon buildup on cooling fins. Installation should be performed by a certified A&P mechanic.
