648041 – Continental Motors OEM Piston Oil Ring
Available now on the Airparts.aero Marketplace.
Overview
The Continental 648041 is a genuine OEM, flight-critical oil control ring set, engineered for a wide range of Continental's most popular and durable piston engines. This is not a single ring; it is a precision-manufactured, multi-piece assembly designed to occupy the bottom groove of the piston. Its primary function is to precisely regulate the thin film of lubricating oil on the cylinder walls, scraping excess oil back down into the crankcase. As a genuine Continental part, it guarantees the correct material, tension, and end-gap specifications required for optimal engine performance and oil economy.
Key Features
- Superior Oil Control: The multi-piece design, typically featuring two thin steel rails and a central expander spring, provides a highly effective mechanism for scraping excess oil from the cylinder wall during piston movement. This is critical for preventing high oil consumption and the formation of carbon deposits on pistons and valves.
- Maintains Lubrication Film: While scraping excess oil, it is also engineered to leave a microscopic film of oil on the cylinder wall, which is essential for lubricating the upper compression rings and reducing friction and wear.
- High-Quality Spring Steel Expander: The central expander spring is fabricated from a high-quality spring steel alloy, providing consistent and uniform outward pressure on the scraper rails. This ensures the rings conform perfectly to the cylinder wall for effective sealing throughout their service life.
- Chrome-Plated Rails: The thin steel scraper rails are typically chrome-plated, providing an extremely hard, low-friction, and wear-resistant surface to ensure a long and reliable service life.
- Genuine Continental OEM Part: As a genuine factory component, it guarantees perfect fitment in the piston's oil ring groove and the correct radial tension for the specified cylinder bore, ensuring airworthy performance and proper oil consumption.

Aircraft Compatibility
The Continental 648041 is the standard oil control ring set for a vast number of aircraft powered by Continental's legendary 6-cylinder engines. It is imperative to consult the specific engine's Illustrated Parts Catalog (IPC) and Overhaul Manual to verify the correct part number.
- Common Continental Engine Series:
- O-470, IO-470
- IO-520, TSIO-520
- IO-550, TSIO-550
- Common Aircraft Platforms:
- Cessna: 182, 206, 210, 310
- Beechcraft: Bonanza, Baron
- Mooney: M20 series (with Continental engines)
Applications
The 648041 is an essential component for engine overhaul and repair:
- Engine Overhaul: A mandatory replacement item during any major engine overhaul. Piston rings are primary wear items and are never reused.
- Cylinder Replacement: Installed as part of a new or overhauled cylinder kit.
- Resolving High Oil Consumption: Replacing worn or stuck oil control rings is the primary solution for addressing issues of high oil consumption and blue smoke in the exhaust.
Why Choose 648041?
Proper oil control is critical for the health, performance, and Time Between Overhaul (TBO) of an aircraft engine. Failed oil control rings can lead to rapid oil consumption, spark plug fouling, and excessive carbon buildup that can cause pre-ignition and catastrophic engine damage. Using the genuine 648041 OEM ring set is the only way to ensure the component has the correct material, dimensions, and—most importantly—the precise radial spring tension engineered by Continental for your specific engine.

The 648041 three-piece oil control ring set is a sophisticated sealing system. The corrugated expander spring sits in the bottom of the piston groove and provides the primary radial force. It pushes the two thin, flat steel rails outward against the cylinder wall and also pushes them vertically, forcing them to seal against the top and bottom surfaces of the piston groove. As the piston moves down, the sharp edge of the lower rail scrapes the thick film of oil from the cylinder wall, leaving only a microscopic layer. As the piston moves up, the upper rail provides a secondary scraping action. This design is highly effective at conforming to the cylinder wall and provides multiple scraping edges, making it far superior at controlling oil than older, one-piece cast iron oil rings.
Note: This is a flight-critical engine internal component. Installation must be performed by a certified A&P mechanic or at a qualified engine overhaul facility in strict accordance with the current Continental Motors Overhaul Manual. Piston rings are fragile and must be installed onto the piston using a proper ring expansion tool. The ring end gaps must be measured and confirmed to be within limits, and they must be oriented correctly on the piston during installation into the cylinder.
