Available now on the Airparts.aero Marketplace.
Overview
The Lycoming LW-13215 is the genuine OEM part number for the Champion Aerospace CH48110-1, a premium, FAA-PMA approved spin-on oil filter engineered for a wide range of Lycoming aircraft engines. As the factory-specified component, this filter is designed to provide maximum protection against harmful contaminants, ensuring the longevity and reliability of your powerplant. It features a full-pleat, resin-impregnated media design and robust internal construction to deliver superior filtration efficiency, high flow rates, and exceptional durability under all operating conditions.
Key Features
- Full-Pleat Synthetic Media: Utilizes a proprietary, resin-impregnated, full-pleat synthetic filter media. This design provides a massive surface area for filtration, capturing a higher volume of microscopic contaminants (including metallic particles from engine wear) compared to standard filters.
- Heavy-Duty Construction: Features a thick-walled steel canister and a heavy-duty steel mounting plate, providing a high burst strength (up to 500 PSI) to withstand the pressure surges common during cold engine starts.
- Improved Internal Design: Employs a robust coil spring to support the filter element, a significant improvement over older leaf-spring designs. This prevents media collapse under high pressure differentials and ensures unfiltered oil cannot bypass the element.
- Strutted Canister: The canister is specially designed with reinforcing struts for added structural integrity, further increasing its resistance to high internal pressures and external impacts.
- Integrated Anti-Drain Back Valve: Contains an internal anti-drain back valve mechanism. This prevents oil from draining out of the filter and engine galleries when the engine is shut down, ensuring immediate oil pressure and lubrication upon the next startup.

The Lycoming LW-13215 (Champion CH48110-1) filter element employs a "semi-depth" filtration strategy. The resin-impregnated and cured cellulosic fibers create a complex, multi-layered path for the oil to travel through. This design combines the benefits of surface filtration, where larger particles are trapped on the outer layer, with depth filtration, where smaller, microscopic contaminants become embedded within the matrix of the filter media. This ensures a high particle capture efficiency without creating an excessive pressure drop across the filter. The filter also contains an integrated bypass valve, a critical safety feature that will open to allow unfiltered oil to lubricate the engine in the rare event that the filter media becomes completely clogged, ensuring lubrication is maintained over filtration.
Note: Always apply a thin film of clean engine oil to the gasket before installation. Tighten the filter by hand until the gasket makes contact, then tighten an additional 3/4 to one full turn as specified on the filter canister. Do not overtighten. Safety wire the filter using the provided tabs on the hex nut to prevent it from vibrating loose.
