Overview

The Aviation Product Systems (APS) APS164-20900 is a premium, FAA-PMA approved brake disc, representing a significant technological upgrade over original equipment. As part of the renowned "BlackSteel" product line, this disc is not cast but is precision-forged from a single piece of high-strength steel, then treated with a proprietary black anti-corrosion coating. This advanced manufacturing process results in a brake disc with superior durability, exceptional resistance to thermal fatigue and warping, and a service life that often exceeds that of the original component. It is engineered as a direct replacement for the Cleveland 164-20900 disc on a specific range of high-performance turboprop aircraft.

Key Features

  • High-Strength Forged Steel: Unlike cast discs, the APS164-20900 is forged from a single billet of high-grade steel. The forging process creates a dense, oriented grain structure that provides superior strength and makes the disc highly resistant to cracking and catastrophic failure under extreme thermal stress.
  • Proprietary Black Anti-Corrosion Coating: Protected by APS's signature black coating. This is not a simple paint; it is a specialized treatment that provides an exceptional barrier against rust and corrosion, even in harsh operating environments like high humidity or coastal regions.
  • Warp & Fatigue Resistance: The uniform grain structure of the forged steel provides excellent thermal stability, significantly reducing the likelihood of the disc warping or developing heat checks and micro-cracks after repeated high-energy braking events.
  • Precision Machined & Balanced: Each disc is CNC machined and precision-ground to be perfectly flat and parallel, ensuring smooth, vibration-free braking and even pad wear. They are also balanced to eliminate rotational vibration.
  • Direct PMA Replacement: A certified FAA-PMA direct replacement for Cleveland P/N 164-20900, guaranteeing perfect form, fit, and function while offering a significant upgrade in material technology and durability.

Applications

The APS164-20900 is the ultimate solution for brake system performance and longevity:

  • Brake System Overhaul & Upgrade: The ideal choice when replacing worn or out-of-limit brake discs, providing a significant upgrade in durability and corrosion resistance over stock components.
  • High-Performance & High-Utilization Operations: Perfectly suited for commercial, charter, and other high-utilization operators where the extended service life and durability of the disc can lead to lower long-term maintenance costs.

Why Choose APS164-20900?

Brake discs are subjected to some of the most extreme forces and temperatures on any aircraft. The APS BlackSteel APS164-20900 is an engineered solution to the common problems of corrosion, warping, and premature cracking. The forged steel construction provides a higher level of safety and durability, while the proprietary black coating ensures the disc remains protected and serviceable for longer. For owners and operators seeking the highest level of performance and the best long-term value from their braking system, the APS BlackSteel disc is the clear choice.

The manufacturing process is a key differentiator for the APS164-20900. In a standard casting process, molten steel is poured into a mold, which can sometimes result in porosity and a random, brittle grain structure. In the forging process used for BlackSteel discs, a solid billet of steel is heated and then compressed under immense pressure to form the shape of the disc. This process forces the steel's internal grain structure to align with the shape of the part, eliminating internal voids and creating a continuous, dense structure. This aligned grain flow is what gives a forged part its superior strength, ductility, and resistance to fatigue crack propagation compared to a standard cast part of the same material.

Note: This is a flight-critical component. Installation must be performed by a certified A&P or AME mechanic in accordance with the aircraft and component maintenance manuals. Brake discs must be inspected for condition and thickness at every tire change and brake lining replacement. It is highly recommended to replace discs in pairs on the same axle to ensure even braking performance.
