The JT15D-5D engine operates on the two-spool turbofan principle. Air entering the inlet is accelerated by the large front fan (N1 spool). A small portion of this air enters the engine's core (the gas generator), while the majority bypasses the core and is exhausted out the back, producing most of the engine's thrust quietly and efficiently. The core air is first compressed by the single-stage centrifugal high-pressure compressor (N2 spool). This compressed air enters the reverse-flow annular combustor, where it is mixed with fuel and ignited. The resulting high-energy gas expands rapidly, first driving the single-stage high-pressure turbine, which is mechanically connected to and powers the N2 compressor. The gas then continues to expand and drives the two-stage low-pressure turbine, which is connected via a concentric shaft to the front fan, thus completing the cycle. The mechanical independence of the N1 and N2 spools allows for greater operational flexibility and efficiency.
