15M23452 – Lycoming OEM Roller Lifter Camshaft Assembly
Part Number: 15M23452
Manufacturer: Lycoming Engines (A Textron Company)
System: Valve Train / Powerplant
Common Synonyms: Roller Cam, Camshaft Assy-Roller Lifter, 4-Cylinder Roller Cam
Overview Section
The 15M23452 is a high-precision Lycoming OEM Roller Lifter Camshaft Assembly designed for 4-cylinder horizontally opposed engines, most notably the Lycoming O-320 series. This assembly represents a significant technological shift from legacy flat-tappet designs to modern roller tappet architecture.
By utilizing a camshaft with lobes specifically profiled for roller followers, the 15M23452 virtually eliminates the "scuffing" and high-friction contact associated with traditional sliding tappets. This results in significantly improved durability of the camshaft lobes and lifter faces, particularly during the critical engine start-up phase where oil pressure is not yet fully established.

Advanced Engineering & Structural Application
The 15M23452 is engineered for Friction Reduction and Valve Timing Precision. In high-utilization aircraft engines, the camshaft is a frequent point of failure due to "spalling" (pitting) caused by the high-pressure sliding contact of flat tappets.
Engineering Insight: Roller Technology Advantage
The roller lifter design compatible with the 15M23452 replaces sliding friction with rolling motion. This reduces the heat generated at the lobe-lifter interface and allows Lycoming to utilize more aggressive cam profiles for better volumetric efficiency without compromising service life. This transition is a key factor in engines successfully reaching their full Time Between Overhaul (TBO) even in harsh operating environments.
Assembly Components
The "Assembly" designation typically implies the inclusion of the camshaft itself along with any integral hardware or spacers required for installation into a roller-tappet-equipped crankcase. Note that this camshaft must be used with the correct Roller Tappet Body Assemblies (LRT23381) and specialized pushrods.
Engine Compatibility
The 15M23452 is the primary roller camshaft for specific 4-cylinder engine configurations:
Lycoming O-320 Series: Specifically optimized for O-320-A2B and O-320-A3B models.
Modern Overhauls: Frequently used as the core component in "Roller Conversion" kits for legacy O-320 engines where the crankcase has been machined or replaced to accept roller lifters.
Textron Lycoming Piston Parts: Utilized in factory-new engines to meet current anti-wear standards.
The Lycoming 15M23452 is the industry-standard choice for maximizing the longevity of your 4-cylinder engine's valve train. By upgrading to or maintaining a roller lifter system with this genuine OEM camshaft, you eliminate the most common cause of premature engine teardowns—camshaft lobe failure. Engineered for precision and manufactured from premium high-alloy steel, the 15M23452 ensures your valve timing remains accurate throughout the engine’s lifespan, providing consistent power and fuel efficiency. Don't risk your overhaul with aftermarket alternatives; choose the reliability of Textron Lycoming OEM hardware.
Installation & Maintenance Addendum
Matched Components: The 15M23452 must be used with roller lifters. Attempting to install this camshaft with flat tappets will cause immediate and catastrophic engine failure due to incorrect lobe geometry.
Crankcase Compatibility: This camshaft is designed for "Wide-Lobe" roller-tappet-ready crankcases. Verify your crankcase part number before purchasing.
Lobe Lubrication: During engine assembly, the lobes of the 15M23452 should be coated with a high-pressure lubricant (such as Lycoming LW-16702 or equivalent) to provide protection during the first critical seconds of oil-pressure buildup.

AirParts Rotable Camshafts are sold as an Exchange Only sales transaction. This means that you will purchase the camshaft and send us back your core camshaft. You will use the packaging that we provide to ship back your core. You will not be charged the core charge until after 15 days if you do not return your core to us. Once the core is returned, it will be inspected by a third-party camshaft 145 repair station to determine whether it is acceptable. In the unlikely event that your core fails inspection or is out of spec, you will be responsible for paying the core charge. If the core does not fail but requires additional processing outside of normal overhaul, you will be charged for those additional small charges. This is standard in the aviation industry when purchasing core exchange items. If the core is in good shape, purchasing core exchange from AirParts provides you with the camshaft you need right away without any wait. It also lowers the price of acquiring the rotable parts you need to get your job done quickly leading to a happy client!
