CR3223-4-03 – CherryMAX® Universal Head Nominal Diameter Blind Aerospace Rivet

Available now on the Airparts.aero Marketplace.

Overview

The CherryMAX® CR3223-4-03 is a genuine, high-strength, "bulbed" structural blind rivet, representing the industry standard for aerospace assembly and repair. This rivet is engineered to be installed "blind"—from only one side of the structure—while providing shear and tensile strength comparable to a solid rivet. It features the patented CherryMAX® locking spindle mechanism, which ensures the stem is mechanically locked into the sleeve, creating a strong, vibration-proof joint. This CR3223 series rivet features a nominal diameter shank for standard hole applications and a versatile universal head.

Key Features

  • Mechanically Locked Spindle: Features the proprietary "Safe-Lock" locking collar. This collar mechanically locks the stem into the rivet sleeve during installation, preventing stem loss from vibration and creating a solid, hole-filling joint with exceptional structural integrity.
  • "Bulbed" Blind-Side Footprint: Engineered to form a large, bulbed footprint on the blind side of the structure. This large bearing area provides excellent load distribution, making it ideal for use in thin sheet metal and preventing damage to composite materials.
  • Nominal Diameter Shank: This rivet is designed with a nominal diameter shank for use in standard, new-production tolerance holes. It provides a secure fit without the need for reaming holes to an oversize dimension.
  • Multi-Component Alloy Construction: Comprised of a specific combination of high-strength alloys for optimal performance:
    • Sleeve: 5056 Aluminum Alloy
    • Stem: High-Strength Alloy Steel
  • Universal Head Design: The universal head is a versatile, low-profile protruding head style that provides excellent strength and bearing surface.

Aircraft Compatibility

The CherryMAX® CR3223-4-03 is a universal structural fastener used extensively in the manufacturing and repair of all types of modern aircraft, from general aviation to commercial airliners and military platforms.

  • Common Applications:
    • Structural Assembly: Joining ribs, stringers, and other internal structural components where access to the backside is limited.
    • High-Vibration Structures: The locked stem ensures the rivet maintains its structural integrity and will not fail due to vibration, making it suitable for use on firewalls, engine nacelles, and areas subject to high vibration.
    • Thin Sheet Metal Fastening: Provides a reliable and strong joint in thin aluminum skins where the bearing surface is critical.

Applications

This rivet is the engineered solution for creating high-strength, permanent joints in blind applications:

  • OEM Aircraft Manufacturing: A primary fastener used in the production line for efficient and reliable structural assembly.
  • Structural Repair: A key component for performing certified structural repairs in accordance with an aircraft's Structural Repair Manual (SRM).

Why Choose CR3223-4-03?

When performing a structural repair or assembly, the integrity of the fasteners is paramount. CherryMAX® rivets are the industry standard for high-strength blind fastening. The CR3223-4-03 provides a solution that is equivalent in strength to a solid rivet but can be installed from one side by a single operator with simple tooling. Its locked stem and large blind-side footprint create a safe, durable, and airworthy joint that restores the original strength to the structure. For certified structural work, there is no substitute for a proven, high-quality blind fastener like the CherryMAX®.

The installation of a CherryMAX® CR3223-4-03 rivet is a precisely engineered process. A specialized pulling head grips the rivet's serrated stem. As the tool is actuated, it pulls the stem, causing the rivet sleeve to form a large, uniform bulb on the blind side of the material. This action draws the material sheets together, providing a high clamp-up force. As pulling continues, a locking collar on the stem is driven into a recess in the rivet head, mechanically locking the stem into the sleeve. This creates a solid, hole-filling assembly. Finally, the stem fractures at its designed break notch. Unlike a simple "pop" rivet where the stem breaks off, the CherryMAX® system ensures the remaining stem is locked in place, contributing to the overall shear strength of the installed fastener.

Note: This is a flight-critical structural component. It must only be installed where specified by an approved structural repair manual or other engineering disposition. Installation requires specialized CherryMAX® tooling. The selection of the correct grip length is critical for proper formation of the blind head and the strength of the final joint.
