The MS20605S3W2 is a friction-lock, self-plugging blind rivet. During installation, the pulling tool grips the serrated stem and pulls it into the rivet sleeve. The tapered head of the stem forces the blind end of the sleeve to expand, forming the "shop head" and clamping the material together. As the pulling force increases, the stem fractures at its designed break notch. A significant portion of the stem is retained within the sleeve, held in place by the high frictional forces generated during the setting process. This retained stem section, or "plug," helps to carry some of the shear loads, making the rivet stronger than a hollow, open-ended rivet. However, because it is not mechanically locked like a CherryMAX®, it is typically restricted to light-duty or secondary structural applications.
