649133 – Continental™ Crankshaft and Damper Assembly
Available now on the Airparts.aero Marketplace.
Overview
The Continental 649133 is a genuine OEM, dynamically balanced crankshaft and counterweight damper assembly, representing the pinnacle of engineering for Continental's high-performance 550-series engines. This is the core rotating component of the engine, responsible for converting the linear motion of the pistons into the rotational force that drives the propeller. Fabricated from vacuum-arc remelt steel and featuring integrated torsional vibration dampers, the 649133 is a flight-critical assembly designed to provide exceptional strength, smoothness, and reliability under the immense stress of high-power engine operation.
Key Features
- Vacuum-Arc Remelt (VAR) Steel Construction: Forged from ultra-clean, high-strength VAR steel alloy (such as 4340). This advanced melting process minimizes impurities and creates a homogenous, robust grain structure, providing superior fatigue strength and resistance to fracture.
- Integrated Torsional Dampers: This is not a standard crankshaft. It features precisely engineered pendulum-style counterweights that are designed to oscillate out of phase with the engine's natural torsional vibrations. This action effectively cancels out destructive harmonic frequencies, ensuring smooth operation and preventing crankshaft fatigue failure.
- Dynamic Balancing: Each assembly is dynamically balanced to extremely tight tolerances. This precision balancing minimizes rotational vibration, leading to a smoother running engine, reduced wear on main bearings, and enhanced pilot and passenger comfort.
- Nitrided for Surface Hardness: The bearing journal surfaces are nitrided, a specialized case-hardening process that creates an extremely hard, wear-resistant surface, ensuring a long service life and reduced friction.
- Genuine Continental OEM Part: As a genuine factory component, it guarantees conformance to the stringent metallurgical, heat treatment, NDT, and dimensional standards of the original engine Type Certificate. This is the only way to ensure a safe and airworthy engine build.

Applications
The 649133 is the foundational component for building a high-performance engine:
- Engine Overhaul: The core component of any engine overhaul. The original crankshaft is subjected to rigorous inspection and measurement, and this assembly is the factory-new replacement standard.
- Performance & Reliability: The integrated damper system is essential for the smooth operation and long-term reliability of these high-horsepower engines.
Why Choose 649133?
The crankshaft is the single most critical and highly stressed component in a piston engine. Its failure is catastrophic. The Continental 649133 is an engineered solution designed not just to rotate, but to actively combat and cancel out harmful vibrations. Using a genuine Continental OEM crankshaft is the only way to ensure you are installing a component with a certified, traceable manufacturing history, free from hidden defects, and featuring the precisely engineered dampers required for your specific engine model. For the heart of your engine, there is no substitute for factory-certified quality.

The integrated dampers on the 649133 crankshaft are a type of centrifugal pendulum absorber. Each power stroke from a piston imparts a sharp torsional "punch" to the crankshaft. In a long, six-cylinder crankshaft, these pulses can excite natural harmonic frequencies, causing the shaft to twist and untwist violently, much like a ringing bell. This "torsional vibration" can lead to metal fatigue and eventual fracture. The counterweights on the 649133 are not rigidly fixed but are allowed to oscillate slightly on bushings. They are "tuned" by their mass and pivot length to oscillate at the same frequency as the engine's harmful harmonics but in the opposite direction. This opposing oscillation generates an equal and opposite torque, effectively canceling out the dangerous vibration and ensuring the crankshaft spins smoothly.
Note: This is a flight-critical engine component. Installation must be performed by a certified A&P mechanic or at a qualified engine overhaul facility in strict accordance with the current Continental Motors Overhaul Manual. All associated components, such as main and connecting rod bearings, must be replaced during installation.

AirParts Rotable Crankshafts are sold as an Exchange Only sales transaction. This means that you will purchase the crankshaft and send us back your core crankshaft. You will use the packaging that we provide to ship back your core. You will not be charged the core charge until after 15 days if you do not return your core to us. Once the core is returned, it will be inspected by a third-party crankshaft 145 repair station to determine whether it is acceptable. In the unlikely event that your core fails inspection or is out of spec, you will be responsible for paying the core charge. If the core does not fail but requires additional processing outside of normal overhaul, you will be charged for those additional small charges. This is standard in the aviation industry when purchasing core exchange items. If the core is in good shape, purchasing core exchange from AirParts provides you with the crankshaft you need right away without any wait. It also lowers the price of acquiring the rotable parts you need to get your job done quickly leading to a happy client!
