Overview

The PPG PRC-DeSoto® CA1000 is a high-performance, non-chromate corrosion inhibiting compound, an essential material for the preventative maintenance and structural repair of modern aircraft. This is not a simple sealant; it is a specialized, semi-drying, thixotropic paste designed to be applied to faying surfaces, fasteners, and structural joints. Its primary function is to provide a durable, long-lasting barrier against moisture and other corrosive elements, actively inhibiting the electrochemical processes that lead to corrosion. Packaged in a convenient 6-ounce brush-top bottle, the CA1000 is the industry standard for protecting the structural integrity of an airframe.

Key Features

  • Active Corrosion Inhibition: Formulated with a proprietary, non-chromate inhibitor package. This compound actively disrupts the electrochemical process of corrosion, providing a much higher level of protection than a simple physical barrier like grease or a standard sealant.
  • Faying Surface & Fastener Protection: Specifically designed for application on "faying surfaces"—the intimate, load-bearing surfaces between two joined structural members (e.g., a skin and a stringer). It is also used during the installation of fasteners to protect both the fastener and the hole from corrosion.
  • Non-Chromate Formula: Utilizes an advanced, environmentally-friendly, non-chromate inhibitor system. This provides excellent corrosion protection without the health and safety concerns associated with traditional hexavalent chromium-based compounds.
  • Thixotropic Consistency: Engineered with a thixotropic, paste-like viscosity. This allows it to be easily applied with a brush or spatula without dripping or sagging, even on vertical or overhead surfaces, ensuring it stays exactly where it is applied.
  • Long-Lasting & Pliable: Cures to a semi-drying, permanently pliable state. This ensures the protective barrier will not become brittle, crack, or flake off over time due to airframe flexing and vibration.

Applications

The CA1000 is a fundamental material for any airframe structural maintenance:

  • Structural Repair & Assembly: The specified material for wet-installing fasteners and sealing faying surfaces to prevent moisture intrusion and corrosion.
  • Corrosion Prevention Programs: A key part of any proactive maintenance program designed to prevent corrosion before it starts, particularly in aircraft operating in high-humidity or marine environments.
  • Dissimilar Metal Isolation: Provides an effective barrier between dissimilar metals (e.g., a steel bolt in an aluminum structure) to prevent galvanic corrosion.

Why Choose CA1000?

Corrosion is one of the greatest threats to the long-term health and safety of an aircraft structure. The PPG PRC-DeSoto® CA1000 is the proven, OEM-specified material for preventing it. Its active inhibiting formula and durable, pliable nature provide a level of protection that generic sealants cannot match. By using the certified compound during all structural repairs and fastener installations, you are making a critical investment in the long-term structural integrity and value of your aircraft.

The PPG PRC-DeSoto® CA1000 functions as both a physical barrier and a chemical inhibitor. As a physical barrier, its thixotropic paste consistency completely fills the microscopic voids between two mating surfaces, a process known as "faying surface sealing." This physically blocks the path for moisture to enter the joint. As a chemical inhibitor, the proprietary compounds within the sealant have a very low, controlled solubility. If any moisture does penetrate the joint, these inhibitor ions dissolve into the moisture, where they are drawn to the metal surface. There, they form a passive, non-reactive film on the aluminum or steel, which interrupts the electrochemical reaction of corrosion before it can begin. This dual-action protection is what makes it a highly effective and long-lasting solution.

Note: This is a professional chemical compound. It must be applied by a certified A&P mechanic with experience in airframe structures, in strict accordance with the aircraft's Structural Repair Manual (SRM) and the PPG technical data sheet. The surface must be meticulously cleaned and prepared before application to ensure proper adhesion. Refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for complete safety and handling information.
