Overview

The Concorde RG-380E/53L is a premium, maintenance-free, Recombinant Gas (RG®) sealed lead-acid battery, a flagship product from Concorde's Platinum Series® designed for high-demand turbine aircraft applications. This 24-volt, 48 Ah battery is engineered to provide exceptional starting power for turboprop and jet engines, as well as reliable essential and emergency standby power. Utilizing advanced Valve Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA) and Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) technology, the RG-380E/53L offers a high-cranking, non-spillable, and aerobatic-capable power source that eliminates the servicing requirements and hazards of traditional flooded cell batteries. The "L" suffix indicates a specific configuration for certain airframes.

Key Features

  • Recombinant Gas (RG®) Technology: A Valve Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA) design where oxygen and hydrogen gases produced during charging are recombined to form water within the battery. This eliminates the need for water replenishment and makes the battery truly maintenance-free.
  • Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM): The electrolyte is fully absorbed into a matrix of microfiber glass mat separators. This spill-proof design allows the battery to be mounted in any orientation and renders it safe for aerobatic flight without the risk of acid leakage.
  • Superior Turbine Starting Power: The low-impedance design, with tightly compressed plates and heavy-duty intercell connections, provides higher voltage under load than traditional flooded batteries. This delivers the immense current required for faster, cooler turbine engine starts, reducing stress on the starter-generator.
  • Exceptional Durability: The AGM construction provides superior resistance to shock and vibration, as the plates are rigidly supported and cannot shed active material, a common failure mode in flooded-cell batteries subjected to the turbine environment.
  • Ready for Installation: Shipped fully charged and factory-tested to assure airworthiness. As a sealed, non-spillable battery, it is exempt from HAZMAT shipping regulations under IATA/ICAO Special Provision A67 (SPA67).

The key to the Concorde RG-380E/53L's performance is the Recombinant Gas (RG®) cycle within its sealed, Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid (VRLA) design. During charging, electrolysis of water can occur, producing hydrogen at the negative plates and oxygen at the positive plates. In a traditional "flooded" battery, these gases are vented overboard, resulting in water loss. In the RG-380E/53L, the Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) separators are intentionally not fully saturated with electrolyte, leaving open pathways. Oxygen generated at the positive plate travels through these pathways to the negative plate, where it reacts with the newly formed lead and sulfuric acid, effectively "recombining" to form water:

This process prevents water loss, allowing the battery to be sealed and maintenance-free, a critical advantage in modern aircraft.

Note: While maintenance-free, regular capacity checks are required as part of the aircraft's maintenance program to ensure continued airworthiness. Always use a temperature-compensating aircraft battery charger/maintainer to ensure maximum battery life. This battery is designed for turbine engine starting applications.RG380E/53L - BATTERY SEALED SPA67

Notice: Concorde Battery VRLA Compliance and Shipping Classification

All batteries manufactured by Concorde Battery Corporation — including the Concorde RG® Series, D8565 Series, Chairman® AGM Series, Lifeline® GPL Series, and Sun Xtender® PVX Series — utilize Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) technology. These are Valve-Regulated Sealed Lead-Acid (VRSLA) batteries, commonly referred to as Valve Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA), Valve Regulated Batteries (VRB), Sealed Lead Acid Batteries (SLAB), or Recombinant Gas Lead Acid Batteries. They are non-spillable and sealed, with the electrolyte absorbed within the glass mat separator.

Regulatory Compliance

Concorde’s VRLA batteries have been rigorously tested and meet the following transportation safety standards:

  • 49 CFR 173.159(f) & 173.159a – Vibration, pressure differential, and free-flowing acid tests (U.S. DOT)
  • IATA Packing Instruction 872 – Vibration and pressure differential compliance
  • IATA Special Provisions – A48, A67, A164, and A183
  • IMDG Special Provisions – 238.1 and 238.2 (International Maritime Organization)

Each battery is securely packaged, short-circuit protected, and clearly labeled as “Non-Spillable.” As a result, Concorde VRLA batteries are exempt from U.S. DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations, IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, and IMDG Code requirements.

Classification Summaries

  • U.S. DOT:
Exempt from hazardous material regulations under Non-Spillable classification, having passed required performance tests.
  • IMO (International Maritime Organization):
Exempt under IMDG provisions, provided batteries are properly secured and terminals are protected from short circuit.
  • IATA (International Air Transport Association):
Exempt under IATA guidelines. When shipped by air, terminals must be protected, and the Air Waybill must include the notation “Not Restricted” along with applicable Special Provision numbers as per Section 8.2.6.
  • ADR (European Ground Transport):
In accordance with ADR Special Provision 598, Concorde VRLA batteries are exempt when properly secured, protected against damage and short circuit, and free of external acid/alkali residue.

Final Clarification

This notice serves to inform all shippers and transporters that Concorde RG®, Chairman®, Lifeline®, and Sun Xtender® VRLA batteries are fully compliant with:

  • DOT HMR49 Non-Hazardous Materials Classification
  • IATA Special Provisions A48, A67, A164, A183 & Packing Instruction 872
  • IMO IMDG Special Provisions 238.1 & 238.2

Therefore, these batteries are not restricted for shipment by air, sea, or ground and are officially exempt from hazardous material classification. All shipments must continue to comply with the packaging and labeling requirements specified by DOT, IATA, and IMDG to maintain exemption status.
