4971-18 – Heli-Coil 18-1.5mm Spark Plug Thread Repair Tool

Available now on the Airparts.aero Marketplace.

The Heli-Coil 4971-18 is a professional-grade, specialized thread repair tool engineered for the restoration of stripped or damaged 18mm x 1.5mm spark plug ports in aircraft cylinder heads. As an essential component of the Heli-Coil Spark Plug Repair system, the 4971-18 is a combined "Pilot-Nose" tap. This unique design eliminates the need for a separate drilling operation, ensuring that the new, oversized threads are cut in perfect concentric alignment with the original spark plug hole—a critical requirement for maintaining the correct electrode positioning and combustion chamber geometry of high-compression radial and horizontally-opposed engines.

Designed for the A&P mechanic working in the field or the engine overhaul shop, this tool is fabricated from high-speed steel (HSS) and precision-ground to accommodate the "STI" (Screw Thread Insert) dimensions required for Heli-Coil stainless steel wire inserts. By utilizing the 4971-18, technicians can restore a cylinder head to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specifications without the cost and downtime associated with cylinder replacement. This tool is a staple for maintaining the longevity of classic Continental and Lycoming large-bore engines that utilize 18mm spark plugs.

Key Features

  • Integrated Pilot-Nose Design: The lead threads of the tap act as a guide, utilizing the remains of the original 18mm thread to ensure the new STI threads are tapped square to the spark plug seat.

  • High-Speed Steel (HSS) Construction: Hardened and tempered to maintain cutting-edge sharpness through multiple repairs in abrasive aluminum-alloy cylinder heads.

  • Single-Step Operation: Combines reaming and tapping into one motion, significantly reducing the risk of introducing shavings into the combustion chamber.

  • Precision STI Tolerances: Cut to exact Heli-Coil standards to ensure the wire insert achieves a high-interference fit, preventing "back-out" during spark plug removal.

  • Hex Drive Compatibility: Designed for use with standard tap handles or specialized hex-drive extensions for access in tight engine baffling.

Technical Specifications

  • Part Number: 4971-18

  • Manufacturer: Heli-Coil (A Stanley Black & Decker Brand)

  • Thread Size: 18mm x 1.5mm (Standard Aircraft Spark Plug)

  • Tap Type: Pilot-Nose STI (Screw Thread Insert) Tap

  • Material: High-Speed Steel (HSS)

  • Finish: Bright / Ground

  • Drive Type: Square / Hex Drive

  • Application: Aluminum Cylinder Heads

  • Governing Specifications: Federal Standard H28 (Screw-Thread Standards)

  • Certification: Industrial Standard / Approved for use in FAA-regulated engine maintenance.

Aircraft Compatibility

  • Large-Bore Continental Engines: O-470, IO-470, IO-520, IO-550 Series.

  • Large-Bore Lycoming Engines: O-540, IO-540, IO-720 Series.

  • Radial Engines: Pratt & Whitney R-985, R-1340 (and others utilizing 18mm plugs).

  • Note: Always verify the spark plug thread size in the engine's Overhaul Manual. While 18mm is the standard for most large aircraft engines, smaller engines may utilize 14mm ports.

Applications

  • Cylinder Head Maintenance: Restoring stripped threads caused by over-torquing or cross-threading during spark plug rotation.

  • Engine Overhaul: Ensuring all threaded ports meet torque-retention standards during the buildup of a core engine.

Why Choose 4971-18?

In aviation, the integrity of a spark plug port is a matter of flight safety. A compromised thread can lead to a "plug blow-out," resulting in immediate loss of power and potential engine fire. The Heli-Coil 4971-18 is the only industry-recognized method for permanent thread restoration that maintains the thermal conductivity and structural strength of the cylinder head. Unlike generic "back-taps" or solid bushings, the Heli-Coil wire insert—when installed with the 4971-18—is made of 304 Stainless Steel (AS7245), which provides a harder, more wear-resistant surface than the original aluminum, essentially upgrading the port while repairing it.

The 4971-18 utilizes the engineering principle of Concentric Thread Realignment. By employing a pilot-nose configuration, the tool leverages the geometric center of the damaged hole to lead the oversized cutting flutes. This is critical for maintaining the Perpendicularity Tolerance between the thread axis and the spark plug gasket seat. From a materials science perspective, tapping with the 4971-18 prepares the aluminum substrate for the installation of a precipitation-hardened stainless steel wire insert.

These inserts are anisotropic in their tension distribution; when the spark plug is torqued into the Heli-Coil, the wire expands radially against the tapped hole, creating a high-friction interference fit. This prevents the "unwinding" of the insert and ensures that the Thermal Expansion Coefficient of the repair remains compatible with the aluminum cylinder head, preventing localized stress risers or "hot spots" that could lead to pre-ignition or detonation during high-power operations.

Note: The 4971-18 is a precision cutting tool. When using this tap on an installed cylinder, the piston must be at Bottom Dead Center (BDC) on the intake stroke, and heavy grease must be applied to the tap flutes to trap aluminum shavings. After tapping, the combustion chamber must be thoroughly vacuumed and inspected with a borescope to ensure no debris remains. All thread repairs must be performed by a certified A&P mechanic in accordance with the engine manufacturer’s Overhaul Manual and FAA Advisory Circular AC 43.13-1B.
