C12ST2/S – Sky-Tec Pull Start Factory Key Conversion Starter Assembly
Available now on the Airparts.aero Marketplace.
Overview
The Sky-Tec C12ST2/S is a high-performance, FAA-PMA approved, lightweight starter assembly, specifically engineered to replace the antiquated and heavy "pull-style" starters found on many classic Continental-powered aircraft. This is not just a starter; it is a complete key-start conversion system. Manufactured by Sky-Tec (now part of Hartzell Engine Tech), the C12ST2/S utilizes a modern, high-torque, permanent magnet, gear-reduction motor to deliver exceptional cranking power at a fraction of the weight of the original equipment. It provides a massive upgrade in reliability, performance, and operational convenience for a wide range of legacy aircraft.
Key Features
- Key-Start Conversion: The primary function is to convert an aircraft from an unreliable, manually-engaged pull-cable starter to a modern, reliable, key-operated electrical starting system.
- Lightweight, High-Torque Motor: Employs a state-of-the-art, permanent magnet, gear-reduction motor. This technology provides significantly higher cranking torque (RPM) than the original heavy, direct-drive starters, resulting in faster, cooler starts, especially on engines with high-compression cylinders.
- Significant Weight Savings: Weighing only 9.4 lbs, the C12ST2/S typically provides a weight savings of over 8 lbs compared to the original Delco-Remy pull-style starters, directly increasing the aircraft's useful load.
- Kickback Protection System (KPS): Features an integrated mechanical fuse designed to protect the engine and starter from damage in the event of an engine kickback during start. This sacrificial clutch mechanism is a critical safety feature.
- Direct Bolt-On Replacement: Engineered as a direct, bolt-on replacement for the original starter. It is designed for a straightforward installation with no major modifications required.

Applications
The C12ST2/S is a transformative upgrade for legacy aircraft:
- Modernizing Starting Systems: The primary application is to replace the entire legacy pull-start system with a modern, reliable push-button or key-start system.
- Improving Starting Performance: Provides a dramatic improvement in cranking speed, which aids in starting engines with impulse-coupled magnetos and is especially beneficial during cold weather operations.
- Increasing Useful Load: Offers a simple and effective way to reduce empty weight and increase the aircraft's useful load.
Why Choose C12ST2/S?
The original pull-style starters on many classic aircraft are notoriously heavy, slow, and prone to failure. The Sky-Tec C12ST2/S is the industry-standard solution that solves all of these problems. It provides the powerful, fast cranking of a modern starter in a lightweight, reliable package. The integrated kickback protection provides a level of safety that the original systems lacked. By upgrading to the C12ST2/S, you are making one of the most significant improvements available for the safety, reliability, and convenience of your classic aircraft.

The Sky-Tec C12ST2/S utilizes a permanent magnet DC motor coupled to a planetary gear reduction system. This is a stark contrast to the original direct-drive starters, which were essentially large, heavy series-wound DC motors. The gear reduction system allows a small, high-RPM motor to produce the same or greater torque at the output gear as a much larger, heavier motor. The permanent magnet design eliminates the need for heavy field coil windings, further reducing weight and improving efficiency. The integrated Kickback Protection System (KPS) consists of a clutch that will slip at a predetermined torque limit. If the engine kicks back during start, the immense reverse torque shears the clutch, disconnecting the starter's gear train from the engine and preventing the force from shattering the starter's adapter housing or, in a worst-case scenario, the engine's accessory case.
Note: This is a flight-critical engine component. Installation involves modification of the aircraft's electrical system and must be performed by a certified A&P mechanic in strict accordance with the Sky-Tec installation instructions and all applicable FAA regulations. Proper wiring and circuit protection are essential for safe operation.
